Ancol Ltd. Background Facts Ancol Ltd. is a one of Canada’s leading metal fabrication companies with one of its’ plants located in Jonquiere, Quebec. The Jonquiere plant is the smallest of Ancol Ltd. 15 operations across Canada. There are 250 production employees and Paul Simard has recently assumed the position of Plant manager. Paul Simard started his position as a plant manager at Ancol Ltd and decided to make some changes. These changes were in an effort to improve the relations between employees and management. Problems and Symptoms The changes included the removal of all time clocks from the plant. Time measurement was now on the assumption that employees has put in their full shift. The intension was to establish a new level of credibility and to strengthen relations between management and employees. Initially the gesture was appreciated by the employees who viewed the new plant manager as a sign of change within the company. However, about 5% of employees began taking advantage of the new gesture by taking extended time away from work consequently affecting productivity. There is also frustration by supervisors must now monitor employee work time in addition to their previous workload. Cause of Problems Although the new plant manager’s intentions were legitimate, the gesture of the clock removal was initiated without sufficient investigation into the problem. This was not the first time that clocks had been removed with similar consequences. Suggested Solutions Meet with the different levels of management individually to determine the problems that exist affecting each group. Obtain suggestions on how problems/issues can be resolved. Meet with staff to determine the issues and problems that they face. Obtain suggestions from staff on how these issues can be solved. Determine from minutes of meeting to get an indication of the
