Analyzing and Evaluating the use of Literature
      The author used literature in this article to tackle issues affecting the success of doctoral degree students in the US. She suggests that faculty-student leadership may be one of the many factors that determine the success of African American students with regards to doctoral degree completion. The article, however, exposes another aspect in light of the mentioned success of doctoral degree completion; the author suggests through her literary work that the first year of study could be difficult primarily due to degree choice and the load of research work that is required from the student in order to qualify for candidacy (Felder, 2010). A quick literature review of the text reveals that interviews were held in a non-biased sense; they were held by a qualified interviewer in the presence of an African American student who knew the interviewees’ experiences and they were held at a place and time of the interviewees’ liking. Another concern was the confidentiality of the responses from the interviewee. The confidentiality was important since the graduates were cautious about their response about the doctoral degree achievement program even after completion. This highlighted a different concern suggesting they preferred not to impact negatively on their success in light of discussing the faculty’s involvement.
      Some of the responses indicated that the African American faculties were more supportive to the interviewed protégé as opposed to other faculties in the program. This reflected a stereotype threat that could determine the success of the doctoral degree student. Further review suggests that faculties at times direct students in their selfish interests to politically impact their fields of concern.   This, according to the author, could hamper the eventual success of the African American doctoral student with regards to completion.
