Brittany Calhoun HIS 109 2/14/2013 9:30-10:45 Election of 1876 Following Lincolns death his vice president toke office and was soon impeached. Then in 1868 Ulysses S. Grant (who interestingly changed his middle name so it would start with an s so now his initials are US) he was reelected in 1872 his term was known as a scandal and he kept troops in the south for reconstruction. The candidates for 1876 were tough to pick cause the republican party was going to nominate James G. Blaine but he was also involved in the scandal too. So they nominated Rutherford B. Hayes when he found out that he was nominated he wrote a letter saying that he would only serve one term if elected. The two candidates were attacking each other personally. Rutherford
