Analysis: Takoma Park Jazz

I attended the Takoma Park Jazz fest on June 10, 2012, a local charitable organization that brings Jazz in its traditional form and more modern forms to suburban Maryland (TP Jazz Fest). Every June the organization hosts an all-day free jazz festival on the streets of Takoma Park. The Fest has two stages, with music featuring local and nationally known performers, food, arts and craft vendors (TP Jazz Fest). The event took up about a mile, the jazz music festival was also a great way to introduce business establishments to people that do not live In the area. I chose to observe this event because I can relate to the music and the area. The vendors performers and activities each had their way of exemplifying and acting out their traditions, and beliefs. Also, the Takoma Park festival reflected the traditional history of the Takoma Park area. Takoma Park jazz festival can be considered a ritual for two reasons. First, the festival is hosted annually. Second, the Takoma Park festival, is a ritual due to the repeating of the event.The festival represents togetherness and bringing the community together to share common interests. For the audience etic perspective plays a large role in the way they see music as whole; jazz creates an environment for the audience to form a understanding of where a lot of today musics roots come from. Sharia's etic perspective was based on her fathers playing of the banjo to her as a child. She is now able to have a open mind and see how other artists relay their personal messages through their jazz music. It is evident that other cultures share this view because music festivals are all over the world. In terms of the music and etic perspective, some of the older audience members may be accustomed to seeing jazz being targeted to African Americans in the 1940's to 1960's, these members of the audience are now able to see how jazz has progressed into a well known genre of music played by people of many backgrounds and from many origins and they have paved the way for new artist. Jazz is linked to rock and roll, swing music, blues, and rhythm and blues these genres of music have condensed to create a whole genre, which is seen as diachronic (a culture change in time). Although jazz has also been thought to be linked to religion and faith, most people believe that jazz is a sensual type of music which is used to relax and create an adult atmosphere unlike
