An Explanation of the Contrasts of Language used in “Silent Spring” Rachel Carson, presents a story of life in the country in her book “Silent Spring” (see Ref. 1). Where the world was once a comfortable place to live in, and nature all around us was pleasing to the human eye, this was all about to change and not for the better. It was the spring a wonderful time of the year, a season full of beauty a radiance of colours, birds sang in chorus, on the trees where they perched and ate the healthy berries that had ripened on the trees. The grass in the fields, where of different shades, some with tints of yellow where the sun had beamed down and scorched the grass, this was the glorious and beautiful countryside. Walks at dawn where the mist fell over the mountains and on top of the hills, oh nature so delightful, foxes barked and played so pleasing, flowers growing at the roadside ahead, People from far away places came in their droves, to view and enjoy the beauty. Many would bring their fishing rods along and go down to the streams below, where trees and shadows would reflect over the waters that rippled at this quite spot. Talk was that people had lived here once and built houses, and barns near this picturesque area. Then mysterious things started to happen. All the beauty that once surrounded us was decaying; had someone cast an evil spell on us, birds that once sang in chorus fell silent, sickness was all around. People were frightened and devastated how could this be happening? Diseases spread and flocks of sheep and all live stock died. Chickens now started dying too and the very few that was left, stopped laying eggs; what was happening? The community demanded answers but none had an idea what was going on. Darkness had fallen over the people and strange and bad things continued. Humans now got sick and there were several deaths unanswered.
