Analysis on the Motivations of Doctor Faustus's Desire

An intellectual movement, known as the Renaissance, sprang first in Italy in the 14th century and gradually spread all over Europe. One feature of the Renaissance is the keen interest in the activities of humanity. People did not blindly believe in God any longer and began to pursue and express the importance of people. Hence arose the thought of Humanism. Renaissance humanism stressed on the importance of human beings. It was the human beings who commanded the world rather than the God (Liu 31). Humanistic writers utilized their own creativity to glorify the worth of the human being. Christopher Marlowe was among these writers. His The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus was characteristic of a humanist in the age Renaissance. The main character in Dr. Faustus was Doctor Faustus. Because of his unsatisfying with the subjects he was studying, Faustus wanted to learn something special. Therefore he tried to learn black art from two of his friends. His incantations made Mephistophilis appear. He signed a contract in which Faustus was willing to sell his soul for obtaining the power to command everything for 24 years. During the 24 years, Faustus made tricks on many people, but not behaved like he thought before. He did Tina 2 not command the whole world. At last, Faustus's soul was taken away by the Devil. This paper aims to analyse the motivations of Dr. Faustus desire. Dr. Faustus's desire was motivated by the constraint of the Christianity, the temptation around him and the influence of the Humanism. The first kind of motivation was the constraint of the Christianity. Everyone does not like the constraint, including Faustus.
