Hansel and Gretel: power of hunger and true face of human instincts Food is a essential part of human’s life, it provide people with energy, necessary vitamins and minerals, simply brings enjoyment, there is no need to describe all the benefits of meal, even small children know why we eat. We just cannot live without eating. In ancient times and still today food and it’s varieties show the wealth of serving table’s owner. When there is no enough money, first thing that will disappear is food. “Hansel and Gretel” proves it clearly, during famine people will do everything for food, even abandon own flesh and blood. Usually in classic stories about abandoned brother and sister there are poor father, usually a woodcutter and his wife, Hansel and Gretel’s wily stepmother. They are so poor, and when famine comes, there is nothing left to eat. Cold-hearted woman, who never had warm feelings for others children, suggests to take them to dark forest, tell a lie and leave poor girl and boy alone. Their father, of course refuses to do it, but he can’t take long wife’s complains and takes his children to their death. It shows again the ugly faces of wicked stepmothers, who will do everything for their stability and sake, fathers show their lack of willpower, strictness, prove that they are imbecile enough, that even cannot stand strong on their points and refuse to wives. For father in “Hansel and Gretel” his own full stomach and good mood of his wife is more important than his own children. It is not the first time , when in folklore and tales fathers abandon their child, but the reason of doing it in “Hansel and Gretel” is small and stupid. If there is no food, parents should work more, share their last loaf of bread with their children, but not to take them to death.
