'Cosi' is a semi-autobiographical play written by Louis Nowra, who explores the minds of patients and how they progress over time whilst being trapped in the confinements of the asylum as 'mental patients'. Lewis Riley the protagonist of play is ultimately transformed from a place that is far more depressing, not having much money to a world filled with love, insanity, comicality, illusions and senses of discovering self identity and self confidence. Placed into an environment where manic personalities are at large, Lewis the young director has taken up a challenge of directing a group of ill minded individuals to perform the opera Cosi fan tutte, a challenge which in time benefits the patients along with Lewis himself. For example, Lewis’ experience with the patients, changes him and teaches him more about life than his entire university education. At the beginning, Lewis is only interested in earning some money and is worried about what may occur if ‘someone [forgot] to take their medication’. Rather than making decisions, he tends to try to please other people by agreeing to whatever they want him to do. Even his political beliefs appear to simply be based on those of Nick and Lucy. However as he works with the patients, he develops a new perspective and insight into certain matters and himself. When Nick and Lucy denounce him for doing a play about love, by declaring that ‘only mad people in this day and age would do a work about love and infidelity’, Lewis is able to realise that love and friendship is more important than politics. He learns about the importance of friendship, clearly evident, that he attends the moratorium, helping the patients prepare for their performance with an additional rehearsal. Lewis also finds strength later in the play, which he was devoid of to begin with . At the start, he is overwhelmed by the patients such as Cherry, Doug and Roy by their 'crazy' behaviour.
