The film centers on Randle Patrick McMurphy, a criminal serving a prison term on a work farm. He is transferred to a mental institution due to his apparently deranged behaviour. In fact, McMurphy just feigns being mentally ill in the belief that he'll then be able to serve out the rest of his sentence in relative comfort and ease. His ward in the mental institution is run by a calm but unfeeling tyrant, Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). The other patients, most of whom are there voluntarily, are cowed into submission by her.

He learns that Lucy isn’t all that faithful to him when he finds out that she is having an affair with his friend, Nick. Although he was upset, devastated and angry about Lucy being unfaithful, he wasn’t completely faithful to her. When there is a power outage in the play “Cosi”, Julie and Lewis kiss.
He was grieving by not wanting to go to school, he did not feel like getting out of bed. But then he was able to overcome all that when he realized that the only way he would manage to make it through all of that death and change was to make a list of everything gave him joy in his life. Although he can be seen as a con he is also a great friend, through his befriending, he helps many of the patients re-build their self-confidence, which Nurse Ratched has obliterated. In addition to building their self-confidence, McMurphy also helps them regain their manhood, which has also been taken away for the most part while they are being ‘treated’. While he may appear on the surface to be a selfish con artist, Randle McMurphy is predominantly a helpful friend who helps and inspires many of the patients on the ward to gain stability in their lives. McMurphy can be seen as a selfish con artist throughout the book. He has a way of manipulating people in a way that he appears to be helping but really he is using them for his own benefit.
