INTRODUCTION “The gift of the Magi” is one of the most famous stories which stand the time of O’Henry. Since it was first published, this works has been considered as one that displays all of the major O. Henry’s traits in abundance. Also, it captivates the attention of millions readers all around the world by its noble humanistic values found in its interesting, significant and touched content. Accordingly, there is no surprise when the story often appears in classic “Christmas stories” and countless stories list, magazine columns, TV specials, musicals, movies, parodies, etc. Altogether, it is undoubtedly the great literary works that worth reading and considering. THE GIFT OF THE MAGI - O’Henry - I. SETTING 1. Author O’Henry was born on September 11th, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was born with the name William Sidney Porter, which was changed into William Sydney Porter later. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a doctor; and his mother was Mary Jane Virginia Swain Porter. She died at a young age because of pneumonia when Porter was just three years old. When Porter was young, he had little formal education. However, he had a great passion for books. He read everything he had, from classical works to cheap novels. As a teenager, he worked as a pharmacist’s assistant in his uncle’s drugstore to help support his family. At 19, realizing early symptoms of pneumonia, he moved to Texas to take advantage of its warm weather, and there he worked on a cattle ranch belonging to friends of his family.
