Written assignment: “The Day After” part 2 Everybody is insecure about something, and most of the times the insecurity becomes our greatest fear. We all have different insecurities, however. Some people feel insecure about their looks, others about their identity. People can be insecure about either big or small things, but no matter what we feel insecure about, it affects our life and the things we do in it. In the story “The Day After” by Sheila Johnson, the main character, Darla, especially knows how it feels to be insecure. The main character in Sheila Johnson’s “The Day After” is a young woman called Darla. The story is about her and her boyfriend Jon. In the story Darla and Jon are at some kind of a pool party, with some of their friends. On the outside Darla seems to be a very confident and strong-willed women. They way we can see that, is in her reaction to the morning after pill. First she knows that she does not want to have a child, which is the reason why they have to visit two different Rite Aids, to get a morning after pill. Another place in we can se it in the text, is later when Jon asks her to take a sip of his beer, she is very sure about not to drink any alcohol. That can also tell us that she knows what she wants and, what she did not want. She gives a clear expression that she did not want to have a baby. Another explanation to the negativity about kids could be that she jealous about Trevor and Mandy’s relationship, and maybe about their baby too. She thinks a lot about that baby-thing, and if she does not care, what is the reason then to her obvious frustrations about all the baby stuff and talk (page 1, line 1-4)(page 3, line 2-3)? But if we take a look on the relationship of Darla and Jon, then Darla do not seem very happy, and maybe that could be the reason why she does not want to get a child. No one wants to
