Miley Cyrus first joined the show business when she was eleven and filming the hit television show “Hannah Montana” that aired in 2006. In the show, she played an innocent student who secretly doubled as a teen pop sensation because she didn’t want the attention that fame would bring her to interact with her everyday, down-to-earth lifestyle. In the show, she experienced her first kiss, had a great tell-all relationship with her dad, and always wore layers and layers of clothing. When the show ended, she disappeared from the media for a while, only to come out swinging with a fresh new haircut and a music video with mature themes that have caused a media uprising. From grinding on a bed, to “twerking,” to even blasting firework smoke from between her legs to imitate male genitalia, Miley easily embodies the new face of scandalousness in the media as she seemingly incorporates random party culture related objects in a haphazard and sloppy way. However, these objects have a commentary of their own, and may say more than one would think. In Miley’s “We Can’t Stop” video, prevalent symbols and themes are used to explore her new identity and simultaneously further separate her from her old one, queering her image by creating intense contrasts, and ultimately one between the traditional and the non-traditional. In the first episode of Hannah Montana, Miley Stewart, Miley Cyrus’s character, must reveal to her best friend Lilly that she is a famous pop star. She is reluctant to do so because she desires to stay out of the spotlight, and doesn’t want to have to deal with the attention that comes with being famous. Instead, she’d rather keep living the life of an anonymous student, or of a regular small town girl, which she does perfectly.
