Intimacy versus Isolation “Good Will Hunting” Will Hunting, the central character is experiencing transitional changes in the areas of occupation, economic status, romantic partner, a mentor, social group and class. Impacting Will’s transition are childhood physical abuse, alcohol abuse, violence, criminal history, and Will’s mathematical genius. Intimacy - The beginning point “Establishing trust is the most important component to making breakthroughs with a patient.. If a patient doesn’t trust you then they won’t feel safe enough to be honest with you- then there’s no point to them being in therapy. It’s like saying, ‘Find, come here and don’t tell me a thing, but go home feeling like you’re doing something about your problems- and give me fifty bucks before you leave, will ya!”- Sean Maquire teacher/therapist (Damon & Affleck, 1997, p.51). Central Character Will played by Mat Damon and who is the central character is hiding from the good will in his character, playing it safe to remain in the safe South Boston bar where he has a group of friends who are his social network and who protect him both emotionally and physically. Wills sees himself forever staying in this environment working a dead end job, living in a run down apartment, and running the streets with his few loyal friends. He spends his free time brawling and drinking. Will has an extensive criminal record with numerous assault charges. Relationships Will & Chuckie – Chuckie, played by Ben Affleck,is the leader of the South Boston gang that Will belongs to. Chuckie is the number one guy and Will is number two which is creatively symbolized by Will sitting shotgun seat in the car. Chuckie like most guys in the neighborhood works a laborer job. Having a job is a status symbol. Chuckie has the ability to get his friends placed on jobs and his friends look up to him for that. Will has looked up to
