A repressed women with a desire to be free and happy. The relation between when the woman in the wallpaper and the narrator when the woman is behind bars symbolizes the narrator and how she is trapped in this tiny room with a husband who controls her every word and actions. He undermines her in almost every way. For example the narrator says on page 590 “I am afraid, but i don't care- there is something strange about that house-I can feel it, I even said so to John one moonlight evening, but he said what i felt was a drought, and shut the window.” This shows how john undermines her fears as just a simple shiver from the window being open when she is trying to explain how she doesn't like the place because shes
To understand why cats tend to claw furniture and wood work may help you understand them better. One reason is to sharpen their claws and the other is called “kneading” a behavior that is also called “milk-treading”. By kneading the cat is taken back to the good old days when they would knead at momma’s breast to make her milk come down. It is believed they only do this to people they really love. It is perfectly natural for a cat to claw and knead.
Within the short story "The Painted Door" Ann shows that she experiences feelings of depression, and isolation. Ann's negative mood is apparent through the story and can be seen at any time during the story. Ann's husband is named John and through the story she says many sarcastic and condescending comments, "plenty of wood to keep me warm - what more could a women ask for" (Ross 288). It is clear that Ann is unhappy with John and not satisfied with him. She does not want John to go to his father's house to check on him because she does not want to be left alone in the house when there is a snowstorm is taking place outside.
Also, when Curley’s wife is talking to Lennie, Candy, and Crooks in Crooks bunk she states “I think I know where they all went even Curley”(37). Curley’s wife knows that her husband is unloyal to her when he goes with the workers to a cathouse. Because no other character in the novel shows jealousy and deceitful, Curley is a bad to be a good husband to his wife it makes her talk even with Lennie. Because Curley ignores his wife and does not let her talk to anybody, he takes part of the responsibility for his wife’s
Page 1 of 3 English Standard: Assessment Task No 5 The poem, ‘Lady Feeding the Cats’ conveys distinct images of a poor, old woman who cares for stray cats in the Domain that challenges widely held assumptions such as the coexistence with ‘beauty’ and ‘ugly’. “Proudly… they march together with an arching of backs”. Anthropomorphism is used within the cats, which connects the readers emotionally to the text by conveying that cats are not as different as humans themselves. The formed image within the reader of the cats which “march together with an arching of backs” prompts the reader to be reminded of an army of soldiers proudly marching towards the enemy. Steward uses metaphors to create a distinct image of the cats within the readers, “those outlaws prowling about the Domain”.
Isobel shared similar traits to Diana, her apartment was just as messy, she was always seeking the approval of others and was also psychotic which is displayed by her obscene prank phone-calls in which she would verbally abuse whoever was unfortunate enough to be on the other end of the line. Isobel’s final quest for identity and change leads her to Mrs Adams house (Isobel’s next door neighbour during her childhood), Isobel finds out that her parents lied to her in order for her to be scared of Mrs Adams after Isobel wrote a poem about her cat. Mrs Adams tells Isobel that she loved the poem and that her cat ‘Smoke’ later died and followed with ‘’well, nothing lasts for ever, as they say.’’ Isobel replies with ‘’I hope they are right’’ implying that Isobel hopes the mental pain inflicted by her mother will not bother her any longer. After a final expelling of frustration Isobel says ‘’I am a writer, I am a
Therefore, he prescribes for her a rest-cure. The rest-cure demands her to sit alone without thinking of anything or interacting with society. Instead of that, she should eat, sleep and sit in the upstairs room of a luxurious house which her husband rents. The wife tries to adapt herself, but unfortunately she become very nervous and angry with her husband for not doing anything for her: “I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes” (par.24). The narrator describes the wife’s room, which has four views to refresh the air and a wonderful view the wife can see the beautiful landscape through.
Many events in the book were very sad and touching when Foster the main girl in the story keeps a pillow case just with her dads stuff in there after he died in the army, she lives with her mom and her boyfriend named Huck who isn’t as nice to Foster at most times making her call him Elvis thinking of himself as a really good singer making Fosters mom the backstage singer and some days he even hits her mom at times and finally one day they get into a fight making Huck break into their house and hitting her mom so badly that they have to run away from their house very fast finding a safe place with Huck coming behind them with his car chasing them and soon they outrun him and arrive to West Virginia. Pg 155-6 “I keep my cat’s eye in my pocket, where I can hold onto it.” – The author starts the paragraph with this statement, this shows that Elaine is infatuated, and reliant on the cat’s eye marble that she believes that “with the help of its power” she can “retreat back into my [her] eyes.” In this passage Elaine goes through two stages, one where she wants to stand up for herself, and the other where she feels ashamed of “being a sissy.” Elaine considers suicide but is too scared. 192-3 In this passage Elaine sticks up for herself, when Cordelia and Carol confront her and speak to her rudely, Elaine’s voice is “flat, calm, reasonable.” Elaine is used to the torment that they put her through and no longer is willing to let them control her. 418-419 In this passage it is almost like Elaine lets go of her terrible memories that she has held onto for so long with Cordelia. When she says, “you can go home now,” and as “the snow in my [her] eyes withdraws like smoke,” symbolises how the ‘snow’ was holding her back from letting go, but it withdraws like smoke, she is able to see through and isn’t blinded anymore, by Cordelia. When Elaine mentions that she is getting cold, this may symbolise her feeling alone and emotionless, as she later describes.
‘No one cares about me’ this makes the reader feel sorry for her as nobody cares about her and nobody wants to be with her. At Curley’s wife death the reader feels for her as when Lennie is touching her hair and gets harder and harder it says ‘her eyes were wild with terror’ which makes the reader feel bad as she only wanted somebody to talk to and when she finds someone to talk to she gets killed for just being nice and letting Lennie feel her hair. Curley has something to do with his wife wanting attention as he goes out to town every Saturday with the men and they go to the brothel while she sits at home and isn’t even allowed out just to the town. Curley also sort of traps Curley’s wife by not letting her speak to the men but his allowed to do what he wants. She only gets attention from Curley and she doesn’t even get much attention from him so wants to speak to others to make her feel less
