Penny For Your Thoughts Tyana Ingram COM200: Interpersonal Communication August 16, 2011 Strong bonds are created through communication, not through mutual understanding, so it is important that couples express themselves on the daily basis. Nara Schoenberg discussed couples that have been married for fifty years, and are very vague with their conversation(Schoenberg, 2011). The first relationship that I had, I chose to discuss the most intimate points of my life, because I thought it would make us closer. I told him about my biological father not being a part of my life, and how it affected me internally, but how I had a stepfather that took on that responsibility. That was very difficult for me because I did not share my personal affairs with people that I did not know for a long. It is also important to discuss your aspirations and goals with your partner, because it helps them to understand what you want out of life. When it comes to developing and ensuring one’s goals and aspirations, men are more affirmative; whereas women are more verbal in exerting their ideas and plans. However, Schoenberg makes it clear that being affirmative can come in the form of affection, and women a more affectionate then men, so just because women are more verbal then men, that does not mean that they cannot be affirmative (Schoenberg, 2011). Some of the generalizations made in the article, are very accurate when applied to my life, but the majority of them differentiate such as the gender differences. I have always been very vocal on what I want my life to consist of, but I also am very persistent in making sure that I carry out what I set out to do.
