What were the short term effects of trial and execution of Derek Bentley The trial and execution of Derek Bentley was a major controversy in British criminal history. Derek Bentley was a 19 year old British teenager who was hanged for the murder of police officer, Sidney Miles under the common criminal purpose “joint enterprise”. The reason the execution was so controversial was partly because Bentley had a mental age of 11 due to an accident that happened to him during the Second World War as a child. It was also partly the fact that the murder was done by Bentley’s accomplice Christopher Craig, 16 but due to the law was not liable to be hanged as under 18’s could not face capital punishment and Bentley was sentenced to death partly based on an interpretation of the phrase “Let him have it” which Bentley allegedly said to Craig and therefore “mentally aiding the murder of Police Constable Sidney Miles”. In this essay, I will examine the short term effects that the execution of Derek Bentley created and come to an overall conclusion of how significant the trail and execution of Derek Bentley was.
This scenario could have been avoided had his parents taken the necessary precautions to make sure the weapon was unaccessible to their child. We see tragedies like this time and time again. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that on average, one child was victim to similar incidents every three days from 2000 to 2005. [2] Ultimately it is due to the neglect and carelessness of parents or guardians, such as Jordyn’s, who underestimate their child’s ability to find the firearm . There are Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws
The use of firearms also has killed a lot of innocent people. h. The school incident that happen in Connecticut which killed 28 innocent children’s and teachers because of the right to have a gun. i. In 2011, there were well over 9,000 gun-related homicides (nearly 70 percent of all homicides committed), or roughly three per 100,000 population, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. 4.
Matt Breslow 5/1/12 English 12 Carnright Teen Curfews Research Paper If your son/daughter was out past 9 p.m., would you feel safe? Many people have said no to this question with all the crime in the streets as of now. With the 2,800 juveniles that were arrested for homicide in 1994 (Teen Curfews), many people wouldn’t want their kids to be in that statistic. Because of this high number of arrested teens, they began to have curfews that made kids stay inside their homes after a set time. These curfews were made to enforce the law and try to lower the teen crime rate.
A little seven year old was only drawing the other day in class. Unfortunately he drew a gun, and ended up being suspended from school. It happened in a town up in New Jersey, which also had four kindergarteners sent home because of playing “cops and robbers.” These incidents show that something has to be changed, because are these kids the true cold blooded killers? The article was not biased; it only gave facts that needed to be known by the American public. This article opens my eyes and shows me that America may be going in the wrong direction to stop gun control.
The Ongoing Gun Debate Steven Webb Axia College of University of Phoenix On the morning of April 20, 1999 one of the worst American tragedies occurred in Columbine, Colorado. The time was approximately 11:19 a.m., when the massacre began at Columbine High School. which in the end claimed 15 lives, which included the two shooters, and injuring 20 others (Wikipedia 2009). This was not an act committed by individuals from other countries trying to send a message but by two young men of our own culture. Shortly after, people began questioning who was accountable for this heinous act.
On December 14, 2012 a man named Adam Lanza went into an elementary school in Newtown Connecticut and killed twenty six people. The fact that twenty of them were children makes me sick to my stomach. Since the Newtown tragedy, over three thousand people have died because of gun violence. And the laws that America has today, does not help the gun violence that we have in this country. How would you feel if your son or daughter was shot and killed at school?
Originally designed for combat in war, should these outrageously high-powered machines be made available to anyone who can afford them? Looking back on all of the horrific events of the last ten years with all of the public school shootings, university shootings, and assassination attempts, the numbers are terrifying. So many lives have been lost to crazy criminals coming into schools and shooting innocent children. People who get access to these high-powered guns are a liability to the rest of Americans. The parents of Sandy Hook Elementary School were not thinking anything horrific would happen to their children when they dropped them off that morning.
The results of this are sometimes tragic, as shown by the recent Sandy Hook school shooting, in which scores of innocent elementary school children were murdered by a mentally ill individual who was able to access firearms. Other problems include criminals purchasing firearms to help them commit robberies or engage in illegal activities. One only has to watch the nightly news to see the results of misuse of firearms and their often fatal consequences, and the question of what can be done to curb the violence often
He and others like Gabrielle Giffords are even bringing the parents of the children who were lost in Sandy Hook to make tearful pleas to pass the amendment. Gabrielle Giffords is yet another example that proves my theory. She was shot in the head by Jared Lee Loughner in 2011 in the middle of a constituent meeting she held. Loughner was expelled from college for disruptive behavior and was showing many signs of mental distress prior to the shooting. So much so that his parents disabled his car at night and took his shot gun away from him.
