Analyses the Causes and Effects of the New Zealand Wars

The history of New Zealand has many wars happens which have many impact on the Maori. Different wars have different causes and effects throughout the past. The war start after the treaty, wars like Wairau incidence, Kingitanga movement, and the northern wars, all affect the Maori for a long time. One most important reason causing the New Zealand wars are because of the treaty. Maori wanted a treaty because they wanted some higher authority to ensure peace and end inter-tribal of musket wars, they wanted control of land sales and European settlements, and they also did not want the French to take over New Zealand. One the other hand, Europeans wanted to allow for orderly legal land sales and settlement. The treaty didn’t make NZ become peaceful; in fact the treaty is confusing. There are two version of treaty, one English version, one Maori version. William Hobson signed for the queen, he signed both treaty and Maori signed the Maori version. In the English version, Maori gave total control to the queen but in Maori version did not say Maori would give total control to British which this cause the Wairau incident in 1843. In Wairau incident, Arthur Wakefield wanted more land but the Ngati Toa chiefs didn’t want to see land, unless for generous price, this ended up with Rangiheatas wife killed and Maori custom was revenge. It led to 8 Maori and 22 European died. The Taranki (1861) and Waikato war (1865) about the Kingitanga movement was because of sovereignity and land. The Maori and British were fighting against religious movement Hauhau (breath of God) during 1860’s, mainly a battle of British bombarding fortified pa against local iwi. By 1861, the British fire power too much attacked along the coast from south Taranaki to Wanganui, which iwi asked for peace. Rewi Maniapoto was the Kingitanga warrior chief whorled Maori resistance.
