Analyse the benefits arising from the construction of new trunk roads and motorways? The first benefit of increasing the number of new trunk roads and motorways available is that it will lead to reduced fuel costs due to lower fuel consumption and less worn down vehicles if they are no longer stopping and starting in traffic jams for example. The effect this has is it will reduce costs to the decision maker in this situation. As shown by this diagram: (More supply than demand will lower the price from P to P1 and increase the quantity from Q to Q1). This diagram shows that this proposition will lead to an increase in road supply as shown by the right shift of the supply curve from S to S1 and this will lead to a fall in the price because the driver will be driving at an optimal speed which will reduce the amount of fuel consumption and thus the fuel and repair costs of the car will decrease. As shown by the left shift from P to P1. The second benefit of adding more trunk roads and motorways is that it could attract new businesses to locate near the new roads as they may see an increased profit potential. This could lead to a possible multiplier effect as shown by this diagram: (Multiplier effect diagram using AD and AS) The diagram shows that by businesses possibly relocating to the new trunk roads this may lead to injections in the economy which will lead to a rise in aggregate demand which will increase the real GDP of the economy and hence increase output. This could, in turn, lead to increased government spending on the roads and improve infrastructure which will increase the productivity of the economy because it enables firms to transport goods and services faster which will reduce the amount of vehicles needed leading to lower costs of production for firms and hence lower prices on the goods and services which increase consumer expenditure.
