An Autobiography about J.K. Rowling’s Childhood Years 1965-1983 Joanne Rowling was born on July 30th, 1965 at Yate general Hospital in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. At this point nobody would have imagined what accomplishments she would make. One year and eleven months later, her sister, Di was born. Jo and her family left the bungalow when she was four and moved to Winterbourne, also on the outskirts of Bristol. This is where Jo wrote her first story. This was called, “Rabbit”. Now they lived in a semi-detached house with stairs, which convinced Jo and Di to re-enact, over and over again, a cliff top game in which one of them would 'dangle' from the top stair, holding hands with the other and begging with them not to let go. They found this endlessly amusing. There were lots of kids that were about Jo’s age living on her street. One family was a boy and girl whose last name was Potter. Now that family claims that they are the reason that Harry Potter got started and really like to brag to the reporters even though Jo claims that none of it is true. Jo really enjoyed school in Winterbourne. She remembered it being a calm, relaxed environment with lots of art and pottery and writing, which suited her wonderfully. However, her parents had a dream of living in the country, so around her 9th birthday, Jo and her family set off again and went to live in Tutshil, a small village just outside of Chepstow, in Wales. Later that year, sadly her favorite grandparent, Kathleen, died. In Tutshil, Jo didn’t like her new school at all. It was just rows and rows of desks facing the black board. The worst thing that happened during her teenage year was that her mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her secondary school though, is where she met Sean Harris, this is whom she dedicated “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” to. She did this because he was one of the only
