Time For Amnesty Juan and his wife came to America seeking the American dream. They now have a family with five children who were all born in the United States. Right now he is illegally working in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for low wages, being paid underneath the table. He struggles to feed and provide for his children. His biggest fear is deportation, which would tear him away from his family, leaving them to fend for themselves. Although Juan is a fictional character, according to President Obama this is the true story of over 12 million people currently living illegally in the U.S (usamnesty.org). It seems we have forgotten that the Declaration of Independence states “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Many view this idea applying only to Americans, but this idea is endowed to all people. If opponents of immigration reform get their way then we are no longer a country built on this vital promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Instead, we are merely short sighted hypocrites focusing only on our own selfish interests, wanting to protect what we already have, but unwilling to offer it to others who have perhaps sacrificed and suffered more than ourselves, unless, of course, they are willing to pay back taxes. “Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation published a rigorous study concluding that low-skilled aliens without a high school diploma impose a fiscal cost of $89.1 billion a year, figures reflecting government services of primary and secondary education to medical care costs of criminal incarceration ”(Kris W. Kobach Immigration Amnesty and the Rule of Law). This will all change if we grant amnesty to the immigrants, giving them the opportunity for education and a fair wage. Instead Republicans and Democrats need to work together on solving the issue of immigration reform, granting people the rights endowed to them, as well as bettering this nation’s diversity and economy.
