Even famous Rosie the Riveter once said, “We Can Do It!” (Panchyk 57) Women played a huge role in World War II. One of the important roles was working in the military. They served in all three services, Army, Air Force and Navy. When the government was recruiting women into the Army, they made it sound glamorous. When the women joined the Army, they did not get glamorous jobs.
Women of all color, during World War II, were able to have tons of freedom expansion and were able to create a new place in society for themselves. When the males of the families had to leave overseas to fight in the military, women were expected to take over the male jobs in factories and perform work other than household duties. These duties in the factories consisted of making munitions and war supplies. Women not only did jobs meant for men in factories, they also performed jobs outside of the factories. According to Sarah Killngsworth, “The war started and jobs kinda opened up for women that men had.
Some women “felt they were needed at home to raise families, crops for food and to fill the jobs that the men had vacated in order to serve their country.”(Suite101) Women’s lives on the home front during World War II were a significant part of the war effort for all participants and had a major impact on the outcome of the war. Once the men went off to war and left their jobs, the women that were single had a great advantage because job opportunities were everywhere. In the other hand married women had a tough time, especially if they had children. Hundreds of women worked in machine shops, welding shops, manufacturing plants, and also worked in war industries to make equipment for the war. New industries, naval, and army bases were being built during the home front.

We Can Do It Statistics show that during World War II the number of working American women jumped from nearly 9 million to 20 million merely because of a simple poster encouraging women (Wiki). This poster of a now well know woman, Rosie the Riveter, refer to a period in American history that can be considered the beginning of a major shift in the role of women. During World War II, when millions of men were conscripted or voluntarily joined the armed forces, defense plants in the United States had to continue producing needed artillery, weapons, and other goods for the war effort. At the time, reasonably few women worked outside the home, and even fewer would have worked in factories like those producing airplanes and other military goods. Meaning since most men had gone to war, nobody else but women were able to fill men's daily roles. This was very important during world war II because the U.S. needed people to work on the unemployment jobs, especially the jobs relating to the war. This propaganda in my opinion is very convincing to women. Its convincing because women knew that if they didn't help, their husbands and family members might not return back.The picture displays the lady wearing a red rag on her head, the He is white and she is wearing a blue working uniform. I believe this is representing the U.S. and its demonstrating her pride for the country.
The lives of women on the Home Front were greatly affected by World War I The lives of women were greatly affected by the war, mainly in a positive way in the long run. Before the war upper-class women did not work, in contrast working class women worked in professions such as maids or working in factories as a way to provide for their families. Statistics show that as many as 11% of women worked as domestic servants before the war. The war also helped the social status of women dramatically in a positive manner as well as giving women the chance to work in a greater variety of jobs, although after the war they were expected to return to their original traditional housewife role. When the war broke out in August 1914, thousands of women lost their jobs in dressmaking, millenary and jewellery making.
Two women by the names of Constance Bowman and Clara Marie Allen told the story of what went on daily while they worked at the bomber plant. A couple of questions needed to be answered though. What does Slacks and Calluses reveal about social class in lives of women? Does Slacks and Calluses support the idea that the country eagerly embraced the idea of women leaving the home to work in factories for war production? Did the women in the factories work there out of a sense of patriotism, or because they lacked other opportunities?
There as evidence in the help wanted section of the paper that showe many were open to hiring women like had never been done before. Of course not everybody was open to the change. Men had different ideas of what women should be doing. It was a big issue then but women needed to work to support famililes and contribute to the war effort. All in all may 8 1945 was a bittersweet time for americans.
This period of time though was necessary to spark later movements for women’s rights. They learned of the freedom and independence they could have if they were to do things for themselves rather than doing what they were told to do with their lives. Just from seeing that production levels rose despite millions of men being called into the war proved that women could do as good of a job as men in these factories. Having black women in these jobs as well was a major step forward in the United States. The downside is that the economy could not sustain having jobs available for both these men and women once the men arrived back home from the war.
