AMERICAN GOVERNMENT Class Project – HIST 4020 Professor. Pasquariello THAO NGUYEN History Project In this essay I will fully explain to you why the United States of America’s four fathers felt so passionately about the second and eighth amendments. Through hours of research I have come to the conclusions explained throughout this essay. Militias started forming in the 1600’s when local farmers formed together in arms against Native Americans. A militia would be a group of men who formed to protect their towns against invading forces. Most times these men would just be local farmers or young men. Almost 13,000 militiamen turned up to push out the rebellion. This is a perfect example of why the four fathers thought it to be such high importance to include the second amendment to the constitution. In present times the second amendment has come under lots of fire. Because of school shootings, crazed gunmen and terrorists, many people believe that the right to bare arms should be taken. Now most militias are labeled as terrorist groups even. This right was placed into order in the event that our government became to big and started to work against the United States people. There have been many cases where the second amendment has been brought into question. Many people claim that the second amendment is not meant for each individual person but mainly for militias. Others argue that it is a right for everyone in the United States of America to bare arms. Take in case McDonald v. City of Chicago. McDonald claimed that his second amendment rights were being infringed upon when he was not able to have a handgun in his home. The courts later ruled that a total ban of guns is unconstitutional and McDonald should be allowed to carry his weapon in his home for self-defense
