12/7/11 HST-5th American Medical Association (AMA) The American Medical Association was founded in 1847. It is the largest association of medical doctors (D.O. And M.D.) and medical students in America. The mission is “to promote the art and science of medicine for the betterment of the public health, to advance the interests of physicians and their patients, to promote public health, to lobby for legislation favorable to physicians and patients, and to raise money for medical education”. The American Medical Association also publishes the Journal of the American Medical Association. This journal helps medical professionals keep up to date with their knowledge. One goal of the AMA is to maintain a good quality to the health care provided by American medical professionals. Approximately 22% of United States physicians and medical students are members of the AMA. The AMA also assures that people in the medical field are being justly treated, and are making proper wages. The AMA also takes a role in politics. In the 1950s and 1960s, the AMA fought against medicare. Similarly, the AMA has people who lobby in congress to push for new legislation that will help the medical profession, and the patients who receive care from the professionals. Likewise, the AMA fights against legislation that will hurt the medical profession. The purpose of the AMA is to maintain the high standards of the medical profession.
