American Identity is how one views or identifies an American either by their actions or how an American speaks. Another way of seeing American Identity is how you define yourself or someone else as an American. American Identity is an important concept because it is a constant reminder of what it means to be an American. There are 2 pieces of text that really add to the meaning of what it means to be an American. Those essays are “Mother Tongue” and The Declaration of Independence”. These 2 pieces of text add to the understanding of American Identity by defining America, our standards and he act towards one another. The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American history. The Declaration of Independence declared our Independence from Britain. The Document stated why the 13 colonies were separating from the tyrannical rule of England. Within the document the founding fathers state that “as Free and Independent States, they have full power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and do all other Acts and Things which Independent states may of right do.” This quote from the last paragraph tells the audience that the new America will not only give their citizens freedom of religion but the freedom to live how they wish to do so. The Declaration of Independence embodies the concept of American Identity because without this document then America would not exist and we would not have an identity to begin with.
