I was unable to play football for the first 3 weeks because of my grades. When I learned of this I immediately started going to labs and everything I could so I still had my starting position and was able to play. After that I never let my grades get under a 2.0 so it couldn’t happen again. The other thing that really pushed me was me looking at my future career. With bad grades like I had, no collages would want me.
I found myself to be very successful in that area until my junior year; when I realized some of those friends could not be trusted. As high school progressed and the drama plied up, I had to remain focused. This may have been one of the biggest challenges for me. Additionally time became an issue when I began playing sports. Attempting to complete the heavy workload assigned by my teachers all the while trying to uphold my social life, it was evident as my lack of attention began to show in grades.
When in high school, there was a sense of urgency to get out of the normal routine and head off to college. The reality when college life hit, was a newfound sense of insecurity that I had not felt since the transition from middle school to high school. Students who attend college away from home are faced with even a greater amount of uncertainty. The other costs not related to financial burden are the physical toll, and no, I am not talking about the pain I felt from my first spin class, although it was painful. The physical toll is based on the change in schedule, the additional homework, the late nights and long walks to and from campus.
Although many people have told me that the best times of your life are spent in college, I knew I would still miss my friends from high school as we moved on to the next chapter in our lives. Having to move away from home for the first time was going to be the toughest part for me. I had never been away from home for a long period of time. I was suddenly overcome with fear. The feeling of fear began a couple of days after, as I started to think about my future.
Causes of Stress on College Students College students are faced with many different stressors during their time in school. It is a chapter of their lives that their parents have tried to prepare them for from a very young age. Whether they are high school students trying to get accepted into a college, a student transitioning into college dorm life or adult students trying to balance their job, their home life, and school, college is a stressful time. The stress of college starts before they attend their first class. In fact, it starts as early as the first college application.
My greatest accomplishment is I made it to high school. It wasn't easy for me because I never did very well in my classes, especially on tests. I was so afraid that I wasn't going to pass my End-Of-Grade tests to get out of elementary school, much more nervous about middle school, but somehow I did it. I remember when the test's started at the end of the year I was so stressed and worried that I wasn't going to pass. It all started in 6th grade when we had End-Of-Grade tests.
Bad school experiences are also a large contributor for the school dropout rate. A large majority of dropout students were only taking the bare minimum general high school requirements. This is because no one pushed them to try harder. This made students feel that school was not important enough to try hard at. These students then do not even care because they do not think school is important.
My injury occurred on May 28th 2012 and I started to struggle in school instantly. The lights bothered me, loud noises were unbearable, I could not concentrate or remember anything and worst of all I couldn’t read. So school and a concussion seemed to not add up. Unfortunately the concussion was taking over my schoolwork and I felt vulnerable. I missed the last three weeks of my sophomore year; however I got the grades I earned the whole trimester, consequently all A’s and B’s.
I was told that when you become a junior that’s when everything starts to get harder and you have to buckle down meaning no time for friends and really no weekend because it was going to require a lot of work, but I was sure that if I got through middle school, 9th and 10th grade that it would be no different than any other grade level class that I had taken already and passed. I was receiving an assignment in all classes to complete during the summer. I started the work, but it was so boring that I never finished the work. As time went on, my grades affected me, so I had to get tutoring if I wanted to be able to play football in the upcoming season. As I spent more time trying to bring up my grade in one class, my grades began to suffer in my other classes.
Students don’t have that support from the teacher that they need to succeed in school. They struggle because the teacher is helping somebody else or having to teach the entire class. The final and main reason why high school grads are unable to read is failure of the parents. Parents are so wrapped up in their busy lives that they don’t make time for their children. Children are often home alone with too much independence.
