Due to the economic crisis that the entire world is going through, many people from small countries are immigrating to big countries like United States and Canada where they might have a better future. Being an immigrant is very hard because of the multicultural shock that immigrants might experiment during the first years. Many of them choose to forget their origins and try to assimilate a completely new and unknown culture while others choose to keep their culture and try to avoid direct contact with new culture. Sometimes this decision depends on the kind of person we would be dealing with. Some people better keep their culture and others should try to form part of a new culture and forget about his origins.
They think of a culture that is founded on constitutional rights and god given freedoms that everyone should have. Some people may even take America a step further and think of it as a culture that may be superior to others because of its past history of opportunity and freedom. Economic, personal, and political freedoms are abundant in this nation, and are encouraged in every aspect of our life. However, the same may also be true in a lot of other countries around the world. American exceptionalism can give America an edge over other nations simply because of our freedom to choose what we want to be and do.
The ethos today simply indicates the ability, through participation in the society and economy, for everyone to achieve prosperity. According to the dream, this includes the opportunity for one's children to grow up and receive a good education and career without artificial barriers. It is the opportunity to make individual choices without the prior restrictions that limited people according to their class, caste, religion, race, or ethnicity”. Well how do American’s feel about this “dream”? For example, if we go explore different opinions, it may give us a clearer picture of what that American Dream means to different people.
Future is the word that immigrants plaster in their mind. That’s why the Shimerdas and others come to America, to get a better future. However, a better future does not come to you in a nice big present with a bow, you have to earn it. When immigrants do come to America, it is like starting all over. That could be a good thing, but it could also be a bad thing.
They also come in pursue of giving a better educational opportunities to their young children. Also immigrants are more likely to create jobs and pay taxes when they live in the United States which helps the economy grow stronger. Although there are many negative conceptions about immigrants these individuals should have the opportunity to migrate to the United States for a better life. Many of the immigrants that migrate were left with no other option but to enter illegally through the border because in there countries they suffered from poverty, crime, the lack of education and opportunities. Abrego writes about a young boy named Daniel and his struggles living in El Salvador while his father is in the United States looking for work.
This interpretation of “living the dream,” has begun to fade away, making “The American Dream” unattainable for many. The American Dream is fading, as higher education has left many students lost and in debt, income inequality is expanding, and economic fairness is dwindling. In today’s America, the struggle with income inequality has grown into more of an issue. Due to the struggle with income inequality, the gap between the rich and the poor is significantly expanding, causing the dream to travel further out of reach for many. In his article, “Keeping the Dream Alive,” Meacham mentions this issue in today’s economy.
The article “Paga ser Bilingue” by Domenico Maceri discusses why workers should be reward for being bilingual. Growing immigrant population in the United States that is not fluent in English requires providing more services in different languages. Many government agencies and American companies are looking to hire bilingual employees. Instead of hiring expensive professional interpreters, the companies prefer save money by providing stipends for multilingual workers. However, some people disagree with providing services in different languages because emigrants will never learn English.
Finally, freedom of religion has become freedom from religion. These are three problems that I feel are bringing our country down.
