There is also the possibility that by choosing standard over non-standard your might be missing out on another factor that make the herbs main component work even better. For my three herbs to compare I have chosen Bilberry, Green Tea, and St. John’s wort. Starting with Bilberry the scientific name is Vaccinium myrtillus. Bilberry is used in many ways some of which include improving night, controlling insulin levels, to treat varicose veins, and to prevent cataracts. The standardized form I came across labels the function as being used to support eye health.
Jessa Thomson Professor Stillwell USem 102 CTR 4 February 1, 2011 ToT CTR 4 Summary: This chapter in Trick or Treatment describes the pros and cons of herbal medicine. Many people resort to herbal medicine to treat their different ailments. But some of the treatments cause more harm than good. For example: St. John’s Wort can treat mild to moderate depression, but for someone with severe depression or a mental illness it does no good and could even make symptoms worse. Personal Statement: I liked the tables in the book that showed whether or not the herbs/ natural medicine were shown to have a good effect on what they were supposed to.
This is when therapies include changes in the diet, the practice of yoga, and a strong emphasis on the connection of mind, body, and spirit (Ellis-Christensen, 2011). There are very little negative side effects associated with alternative medicine as many people are able to purchase herbs, vitamins, and other dietary supplements over-the-counter. A form of alternative medicine that is commonly used is herbal tea containing Echinacea and Chamomile. The combination of these two elements helps to strengthen the immune system of the body. Herbal teas also have the ability to suppress illness as they assist with sore muscles, stomach flu, and a cold.
Within the studies researched there were possibly skewed results due to a small number of participants, some of the studies had a short duration, and dosing protocols were different. But the studies did discover that patients showed improved hemoglobins with short intervals of receiving vitamin C post dialysis treatment and also showed that the need for large doses of Epogen changed with addition of vitamin c to their regimen. Nephrology nurses can use this knowledge when monitoring lab values, as they may see increased Hgb levels when Vitamin C is introduced and will need to adjust the patients epogen doses. Lastly nurses need to be apprised to side effects related to vitamin C use and monitor and assess their patients for signs of hyperoxalemia such as noted crystals in the tissue of the body, cardiovascular changes and symptoms and vascular changes. Summary In summary, this research found that there was some benefit of using Vitamin C for improving hemoglobins in patients with ESRD receiving hemodialysis.
Question: iii) The system prevents dosage errors being made Justification: Relates to safety - too much or too little of a drug would prevent the medication from being effective or be potentially dangerous. Question: When a drug is chosen can you only prescribe a safe dose? iv) The system provides relevant information about the medication Justification: Relates to helpfulness - There are many different drugs available for a doctor to prescribe, many of which have similar names or use brand names rather than the active ingredients. Furthermore generic compounds are typically less expensive than branded ones – allowing doctors to access drug information provides them with the ability to compare different drugs available and choose the best possible medication for the patient. Question: Can you see information about the drug such as dosage, active ingredients and alternatives?
Another advantage of acupuncture is that it is a natural substitute to medicine; this is because it reduces pain naturally. Also acupuncture will help to remove all the toxins as well as helps fast healing, this is because it increases the blood flow. Acupuncture – Disadvantages One of the disadvantages of acupuncture is that you can be sore for a while after your treatment, although this is not a bad thing it certainly will be for the person in pain. All acupuncture sessions are scheduled to have a follow up procedure which can be an inconvenience for some people. As well as this it can be quite expensive as it doesn’t come under the NHS.
Another way of reducing the potential harm to intravenous drug users is to provide medically controlled drugs as a substitute for street drugs. Drugs such as methadone are less harmful than street heroin, partly because they are free from impurities. An issue with the public health interventions I have discussed is that it may be too early to measure. It is still too early to see the full effect of the smoking ban as it was only introduced fairly recently, which could explain why there have been no significant changes in the number of smokers following the ban. As well as this, harm minimisation programmes are controversial because they appear to condone
Drugs are used to prevent flares, treat flares when they do occur, and minimize complications (“X-Plain”). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to treat people with joint or chest pain or fever. Antimalarials, originally used to treat malaria, are another common drug used to treat lupus. Studies have shown that continuous treatment with antimalarials prevent flares from occurring, and treat fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and inflammation of the lungs. However, the basis of lupus treatment involves corticosteroids, a drug related to cortisol, a natural anti-inflammatory hormone.
The level of prevention of high in the pill form and this allows Tina and Dan to feel safe and confident that they will not get pregnant any sooner then they want to be. There are some health benefits credited to the birth control pill. Some of these are a lower risk of fibrocystic breast growth and even a lower risk of pelvic inflammatory infection/disease. With Tina and Dan being in a full committed relationship, then they should not worry about the pill not preventing a sexually transmitted disease. Just like any other medication, the birth control pill does come with side effects as such as followed, gain in weight, some breast tenderness and this can be
Psychodynamic methods are only effective on certain patients whereas drug treatment corrects the chemical balance in the brain and will become effective on almost every patient with the right usage of drugs. Counselling is a very good way of relieving the patient of their inner troubled emotions and to over come the illness but is not as reliant as the medical approach, drugs are widely used today for mental illness sufferers and shows that it is effective and a quicker solution than the analysis of dreams. Sigmund Freud’s methods were to be effective but only in a small degree and it could not be certain that that patient was completely ‘cured’ from their illness, drugs were much more reliable for patients and easier for them to be accepted into society once more helping them mould back into normality like they had once
