Aline’s journey - Edwidge Danticat Presentation: Aline is a girl, who lives in Haiti. Her and her family is very poor. In Haiti a lot of natural disasters can occur. These are either hurricanes or flooding. And Haiti is also one of the poorest countries in the world. Because of this, Aline and her family, wants to escape to USA, in hope of achieving a better life. They hope they can life a better life in the US, and that they will be treated better, instead of having a corrupt and violent government. Analysis: Atmosphere: From the very beginning of the short story we got a pretty sad and negative atmosphere. That is of course because of the circumstances. It feels as if something is not as it should be. But I can’t give a general description of the atmosphere, as it changes throughout the story. It doesn’t matter if they are in Haiti or in jail, whenever the family is together the atmosphere seems calm and peaceful. Even though the situation seems really tough, they manage to keep a certain happy decency. It feels as if the family knows they are all going to survive if they just stick together. But, Edwidge Danticat does describe the terrible conditions and the very puny hope the Haitians have, when they try to illegally immigrate to the United States, for a better and more rewarding life. Narrator: 1stperson narrator. The story is chronologically. Environment: The environment is very poor in Haiti, and there is filth everywhere. Setting: I believe the story could have happened in the 21th century. Time: The story happens over 5-6 weeks or so. Language: The language in the short story is pretty simple. It’s plain English all the way, and no slang. Characteristics: Aline is the main character in this short story. She is a girl, who was born in Haiti.
