What is Alcoholism is alcoholism consider to be a disease or simple abuse? How does alcoholism affect the user and their surroundings? Alcoholism is a progressive disease that impairs the psychological, emotional, and physical health of both the alcoholic and his or her family. Alcoholism has been labeled as a “family disease” because its effects lead to dysfunctional roles and behaviors of the alcoholic and their family members. In the USA, 15% of Americans are problem drinkers; while between 5% to 10% of male and 3% to 5% of female drinkers could be diagnosed as alcohol dependent, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this paper we will touch basis on the history of alcoholism, the effects of alcoholism in the body, how many deaths alcoholism causes per year, the phases of alcoholism, treatment, and prevention. History of Alcoholism Alcoholism can be described as the addiction to the consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency. Alcohol is a product that has provided a variety of functions for and has been served to people throughout all of history. Throughout history alcohol has played an important role in religion and supplying necessary nutrients and has widely been used for medical and analgesic properties. The role of alcohol is it can be used as a social lubricant, can facilitate relaxation, pharmacological purposes, and can increase the pleasure of habits, which can be lethal at times. Thus, while alcohol has always been misuse from times, it has proved to be beneficial to most. No one know when the beverage alcohol was first used however the discovery of a beer jug which have characteristics indicating it may have been as early as the Neolithic period (10,000 B.C.). The earliest from of alcohol it is believed to be a mixture of grain, fruit juice berries and honey.
