How many people have ever told you not to drink and drive? How many times have you heard about the consequences of alcoholism? Have you ever taken them into account? Alcoholism is one of the major problems in society today. The effects of this illness are really serious. Alcohol has both negative short-term and long-term effects on our bodies and minds. Alcoholism is a problem American people deal with on a daily bases. There are many effects to this illness such as; physical, psychological, and economic effects. The physical effects are most important effects because these effects can cause death, disease and serious illness. Alcoholism causes cancer in the stomach, kidneys, and liver. A lot of the time these cancers cannot be stopped. By the time the cancers are noticed it has gone too far. Alcohol alters the digestion of nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Alcohol affects the brain it causes difficulty walking, blurred vision, slurred speech, slowed reaction times and memory loss. There are other effects in the body like gastritis and cirrhosis of the liver. All these physical consequences could cause death if you drink large amount of alcohol and for long periods of time. Psychological is another effect due to alcoholism. At the beginning, alcohol makes you feel relaxed, but if you drink it in excess, it increases anxiety and causes depression. It also causes family and legal problems. Alcoholics are not the only people affected by their drinking; the people around their life also suffer. In a lot of people it causes violence and changes of behavior, we are always hearing about bar fights. In some extra cases of alcoholism the result is suicide. Alcohol is very powerful and alters all your normal behaviors and actions. Economic effects are a major problem with today’s society. They are also a major problem to alcoholics.
