Alcoholism The first thing that pops into my head when I think of alcoholism, is the image of an old dirty bum, setting on the corner begging for money and drinking out of paper bag. I could not have been further off on my personal view or stereotype of an alcoholic. Alcoholism also known as alcohol dependence syndrome is a destructive pattern of alcohol use that includes tolerance to or withdrawal from the substance, using more alcohol or using it for longer than planned, and trouble reducing its use. Alcoholism is a disease, and is the third most common mental illness, affecting more than 14 million in the United States (about.com, 2011, page 3). Alcoholism is not a new issue in world culture; individuals have been misusing alcohol all throughout recorded history. In intend on giving a brief history of alcoholism, explain what are its causes of alcoholism, its signs and symptoms, how it is diagnosis, and its long-term effects on the body and society. Scientist has discovered late Stone Age beer jugs (10,000 B.C.), which the earliest record of people intentionally fermenting drinks. There is record of alcohol abuse from Biblical, Egyptian and Babylonian sources. It was not until 1647 when a Greek monk named Agapios, was the first to establish the correlation between chronic misuse alcohol, and its damage to the nervous system and body (Wikipedia.com, 2011, page 1). Before we had the alcoholism, dipsomania the common term, which physician Dr. C. W. Hufeland coined in 1819 (Wikipedia.com, 2011, page 1). In 1849 Swedish physician, Magnus Huss was the first to use alcoholism as a medical term. Alcoholism has mixture of components, it may be environmental, psychological, hereditary, or combination of them.
