Observation paper Hailey Dummitt #15 September 26, 2013 I began my evening searching for the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on Fairlane Drive in Vanceburg, Ky. The exact address that was given to me ended up being a residential house so I continued on to the nearest gas station to ask if they were aware of one in the area. The attendant sent us to a couple different businesses where they had actually attended the meetings themselves. My classmate, Hannah and myself were unable to find any meeting in session, but went back to interview the attendant who is an acquaintance of my family. Jo Dawn Anderson was excited to tell us her story after she discovered that we were trying to learn about the meetings for a college class. Jo Dawn’s addiction began after she had multiple surgeries with difficult recoveries. She was prescribed painkillers to help with her pain and explained her ignorance about the drugs contributed to her addiction. She was unaware that she could become addicted. From heroin, to alcohol, even painkillers can consume a person’s life to the point that they aren’t living for themselves anymore just their addiction and nothing else. For those seeking help, having a small but powerful prayer to remind them that they have the power to make a difference in their life and the hopes of making amends with their family and friends keeps them headed in the direction of sobriety. Finally, for addicts and alcoholics alike, having a plain and clear twelve step program to follow all the way back to a substance free life and re-becoming a prosperous member of society is all completely worth the trials and struggles an addict or alcoholic may encounter on their way to
