Alcohol Abuse among Women Many people believe that women’s priorities consist of being able to keep a clean house, raise their children, maintain a good job, and remainconscience of their good looks.Consequently, this can be very stressful and overwhelming for women to be able to handle all of these responsibilities in their everyday lives. These aresome of the main reasons why alcohol abuses among women in America aretrending upward. Gradual use of alcohol among women has become evident throughout the past millennium. Today, women tend to have more responsibilities and higher stress levels than they did in the previous years.Slightly after 1945, the role of women began to change. More women entered the work force, but they were still expected to be good mothers and wives. As a result, some women chose alcohol as a coping method because it was easily accessible and socially acceptable. Alcohol has become increasingly accessible to women, through restaurants, supermarkets, and wine bars. Marketing strategies for alcohol portray images of attractive women having fun and experiencing increased freedom and confidence. Also, the alcohol industry knows that the best way to create lifetime heavy drinkers is to start them early. Many younger women like the strong drinking image and the idea of being seen as one of the ‘lads’. The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘ladette’ as ‘a young woman who behaves in a boisterously assertive or crude manner and engages in heavy drinking sessions’. When young girls see women taking part in this behavior, it evokes the idea that "bad girls have more fun," which, parenthetically, is a logo for a popular brand of beer. This belief is harmful to the development of a healthy character because it makes it seem like drinking makes you fun and sexy, and no matter how ridiculous you act while drunk, today’s society will still acceptyou.
