Air Pollution What is air pollution? 3/23/2012 HP Ramonita Santiago There are many kinds of air pollution such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ammonia, methane, carbon monoxide, and ozone. All these different kind of air pollution has its own affect on human’s health and on the environment. There are many different ways to control air pollution, but everyone must do their part to help keep the environment cleaned. The air pollutions I will be discussing are Sulfur dioxide is mainly emitted by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil and coal. Nitrogen oxide is a group of different gases made up of different levels of oxygen and nitrogen. Ammonia is a chemical compound that consists of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms tightly bonded. Methane is a chemical compound composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Carbon monoxide is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Ozone is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. These different types of air pollution affect human health and the environment in their own ways. Sulfur dioxide affects human health when it is inhaled. It irritates the nose, throat, airways, which causes coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or a tight feeling around the chest. The affects of sulfur dioxide is felt very quickly and most people would feel the worst symptoms in 10 to 15 minutes after breathing in sulfur dioxide. Nitrogen oxide affects human’s health when small levels of nox are inhaled by causing nausea, irritated eyes and/or nose, fluid forming in lungs and shortness of breath. Breathing in high levels of nox can cause rapid breathing spasms, swelling of the throat; reduce in oxygen intake; a larger build up of fluids in the lungs and/or death. Ammonia affects human health both as a gas and as a
