During old age individual’s experience a variety of physical and psychological changes, these changes may vary depending on the individual lifestyle as different life style factors can influence how an individual develops. However I’m going to cover all the common physical and psychological changes which can occur during old age. Physical changes: A physical change which occurs only in women as they reach old age is menopause, however in some circumstances this can occur in younger women.
2.1 The medical model sees the patient with dementia as a problem. They need to adapt to fit in with society other wise become isolated. 2.2 The social model sees that society need to change to accommodate individuals with dementia, recognising the person other than the illness. 2.3 Dementia should be viewed as a disability because people with this are unable to function in the normal running of every day life. They can forget to take medications, forget that they need to eat or drink or wash and change their clothes.
Describe the elements of a comprehensive health assessment of a geriatric patient. What special considerations should the nurse keep in mind while performing this assessment? Nurses and healthcare professionals need to pay close attention to different things while performing a comprehensive assessment on the older population. The comprehensive assessment includes mental and functional status, social and economic status and the actual assessment of the body functions (Jarvis, 2012). It’s important to observe mental status changes and functional status changes, this can determine how well the patient can take care of themselves and deal with their health promotion on their own.

The elderly clients I care for generally have ill health, the illnesses they suffer from can be physical and mental.

Problem: Delirium in older adults is often unrecognized by the healthcare professionals and 97% of the family care givers who observed delirium symptoms attribute it to aging. Hence the health of the older person is jeopardized Purpose : 1. To examine the frequency of delirium in older adults residing in two Adult Day Centers 2. Their caregiver’s psychological stress related to the symptoms, mental health and coping with the older person’s care Hypotheses: Delirium in older adults attending day care center and family care giver distress The onset of delirium in healthy community dwelling elders is most often associated with an infection and no studies were found reporting on the frequency of delirium in community dwellers Critical appraisal: Result: Only 6.7 % of older adults had a positive screen for delirium and 96.6% family care givers stated that they had no knowledge of delirium prior to this study. Nursing Implications: Delirium in community dwelling older adults are often associated with infection.

Poor housing can affect people’s health.
