Age of Enlightenment Study Guide World History p629 Terms to Know: Enlightenment * The Age of Enlightenment started simultaneously in France, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the American colonies, the movement was buoyed by Atlantic Revolutions, especially after the success of the American Revolution, when they breaking free of the British Empire. The age of enlightenment is basically where human mind started to move forward. The age of enlightenment was critical to questioning of traditional institutions, customs, and morals, and a strong belief in rationality and science. Social contract * The social contract implies that the people give up sovereignty to a government or other authority in order to receive or maintain social order through the rule of law. It can also be thought of as an agreement by the governed on a set of rules by which they are governed. Natural rights * The theory that all man is born equal and good and these men possessed what they identify as Natural rights. Natural right that men possess included the right to life, liberty and property. This idea was first proposed by John Locke, a 17th century philosopher. This was fundamental to the US bill of right. Philosopher * Philosopher is a person who study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. Salon * A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to interest one another and partly to refine the taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation.
