“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.   Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.   Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it”-Buddha. In both The Catcher in the Rye and Antigone, Readers are taken through the struggles of Holden and Antigone as they go against conformity and fight for what they believe society should be like. Although both characters share a common goal, Antigone fights against a law for society where as Holden fights against an idea of society.
Both Antigone and Holden go against what they have been told or showed that society should be like and fight for what they believe in. Antigone rebels against her Uncle’s law because she sees his rules and everyone’s fixed idea of society as unfair. Similar to Antigone, Holden is not accepting of the “phonies” in his society and stands up for what he believes in. Readers see Holden’s view of people as he says “If you sat around there long enough and heard all of the phonies applauding and all, you got to hate everyone in the world”(142). Due to the idea of phonies in the world, Holden runs away from his school and creates a different life so he is not forced to fit into the stereotypical group of people. He goes against a way of being and shows readers his hatred for the uniform society. Holden sees the world categorized into two kinds of people: adults who are arrogant and fake, and children who will soon fall into the conformity. Therefore he feels that it is his job to stop these children before this occurrence. This is evident as Holden says “What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the edge of some crazy cliff- I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from...
