For quite some time now the question of whether or not handguns should be legal to citizens has really haunted our society. Is it morally right for anyone to bear arms and use it if necessary? A lot of questions have been asked and some have been thrown back and forth between pro and anti-gun users for some time now. There are people who say handguns in the home can only cause unneeded accidents. Some also, feel it is extremely easy for individuals to obtain a handgun. Pro-gun users are aware of the many accidental deaths that might occur by the misuse of guns. However, they feel it is there right to be able to own a gun to protect themselves from those who want to cause them harm or their family harm. The main argument pro-gun users have on their side is the second amendment, which states an individual has the right to keep and bear arms. Individuals that support the second amendment stand by the fact that it is better to have a gun and not need it then to need a gun and not have it. According to GUNNING FOR THE WORLD by Morton, David he states “The idea that owning a gun is a human right as dear as, say, the freedom to protest.”(Morton 61) The public needs to take a close look at gun control. If guns were outlawed and criminals will still find ways to access a gun and the common citizen would be helpless. Self-protection is probably the whole reason for own a hand gun. Citizens do deserve the right to protect their families in their own homes, especially if the police are judged incapable. Guns don’t kill people – people kill people. I under that restricting gun ownership might not do anything to make society safer. It is the intent of the criminal we should fear, and that will remain the same whatever the gun law is.
