They have created a strong economy through farming, trading, and art production. Their outstanding and unique artistic traditions include woodcarving, sculpture, metal work, textiles, and beadwork. Although I’m Nigerian there is much that I have to learn myself when it comes to the culture. I will be taking an in-depth look on the Yoruba’s history, cultural values, some important rituals and practices, religion and belief’s, and the role of gender. In the 4th century BC, Yoruba people we not initially known as Yoruba although they have common sentiments and share a common ethnicity and language group.
As well as many other religions/likewise, traditional religions belong to those, whom practicing and celebrating life-cycle rituals play an essential role throughout the one’s life. In Africa; for example, the most popular yet well-known rituals such as, birth, coming of age, marriage, and death in general concepts are reasonably extensive between each other. First, the native African civilizations and their pattern of performing life-cycle practices are frequently initiated as some type of contributions to the familial/ancestral spirits. These offered gifts are a combination of food such as pumpkins, honey, and yams, with different beverages; for example, water or something stronger left at the worship places “… taken out and poured over the ancestral, burial ground” (Sinaiko, xli). Therefore, birth as a first ritual plays an important part, and shortly after birth, it is crucial to name a newborn baby.

Their resources were and still are crucial for humans’ survival. One of their many legacies was art. In the Harvard University Peabody Museum, where the Mayan civilization exhibition is located, we find the San Bartolo and Bonompak exhibits. One of the main attractions of these exhibits is two murals from the ancient Mayan city-states.

There are many reasons that learning about the Anasazi and the Mound Builders could be useful and helpful to us in the present. First though, before we delve into these reasons, we should have a solid understanding who they were. The mound builders were a Mississippian culture including mound building Native Americans that flourished for about 700 years. On the other hand the Anasazi were an ancient Native American culture located on the present day four corners area or the Colorado plateau. They lived in a range of structures including pit houses and cliff dwellings.
(Mahoney, 2008) The River is still a source of food and water. The river Nile contributes greatly to Agriculture in Egypt. To date, the Nile River remains one of the most outstanding and amazing natural feature that continues to add value and improve the Egyptian economy and the Middle East economy as well. Note that the waters of the Nile have attracted and affected politics in AFRICA FOR MANY generations. This is because of the influence the river has had on many different political aspects.
Timbuktu falls into criterion 2 because the mosques and holy places of Timbuktu have played an essential role in the spread of Islam in Africa at an early period. Timbuktu is listed in criterion 4 because the three great mosques of Timbuktu, restored by the Qadi Al Aqib in the 16th century, bear witness to the golden age of the intellectual and spiritual capital at the end of the Askia dynasty. Archeologist James Henry Breasted first described a region of land which begins in present day southern Iraq and extends north along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It turns west toward ancient Assyria and then south towards present day Syria. This area then turns down into southern Palestine. J. H. Breasted called this area the Fertile Crescent because of its crescent-shape and the fertility of the land.

Glynn Isaac: Pioneer of Prehistorical Archaeology When looking back at those who have created major impacts on the discipline of archaeology, many names come to light. The Leakey family has made incalculable discoveries to advance our understanding of the past, while Sir Leonard Woolley has furthered our understanding at the Royal Cemetery. The list goes on and on, but one person who has made very unique strides in this field is Glynn Isaac. Through his efforts, we have learned much about our hominin ancestors and their evolutionary changes within the regions of Africa and throughout the world. Glynn Isaac was an incredible archaeologist and his findings are still used today when reviewing both paleolithic and neolithic history of hominin species.
