Jones March 11, 2012 Sara Matthews 1234 Cooler Street Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Dear Sara, Based on our conversation the other day, I noticed that you had so many questions with regards to African-Americans and where they stand in the scheme of things in the United States. I appreciate your candor and your questions, but I decided to write you this letter and explain some things to you. As an African-American, I must say that no one can fully understand what it is like to be an African-American in the United States. African-Americans organized and fought peacefully for their freedom and for the change of laws that prevented them from being a normal respected citizen. There are two important men that had a large amount of influence on the Civil Rights Movement. Their names are Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. These two men inspired a generation of African-Americans to say that they would not take this treatment lying down any more. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most known Civil Rights Leader. He took the teachings of Gandhi and the Dalai Lama to create a non-violent movement that captured the hearts of Americans and people abroad. Many African-Americans staged peaceful protests such as marches, sit-ins and public speeches. During some of these peaceful protests they were brutally attacked by White Americans and law enforcement. Many of these attacks were filmed by the media and the brutality was seen by most Americans on their televisions at home and in the media abroad. After this happened, I personally believe that the country was embarrassed and had to make some legal and political changes in order to boost their political and social reputation .
