Digital Lesson Sequence Automated External Defibrillators Automated External Defibrillators This lesson teaches students about Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs have become a common sight in our community and everyone should get training on their use. St. John Ambulance offers AED as part of all their first aid training courses. AEDs can save lives and this lesson teaches students why an AED is effective and how to use one. For this lesson we used iMovie to create a movie of a scenario that an AED can be used. The photos, voice-overs and sound effects used in the iMovie were chosen to catch a grade 9 students’ attention. We used their peers to make the scenario realistic and relatable. We used the technology of a PowerPoint to display the information about why and how AEDs are used in an organized and easy to follow manner, with images to make learning easier. We included the link to our Virtual Body website in our PowerPoint to prompt ourselves when it is time to explain the anatomy of the heart before moving on to the steps that the students will need to follow in their practicum (that would be done if lesson was a full class period). We also used PowerPoint to outline the steps to using an AED with a demonstration to follow in the second portion of our iMovie. We chose to use SMART board technology with our Virtual Body software to allow students to see a 3D anatomy of the heart. If time permitted in a classroom students would be able to go up to the SMART board and examine the human body in depth; however during our presentation time does not permit this activity. This is a great way for students to actively investigate the body. LESSON PLAN AED Course: First Aid Unit: AED Topic: Automated External Defibrillator Grade: 9 Date: March 9,
