Running head: ADVERTISING 1 Advertising to Our Young People Causing Obesity Terry Richmond ENG 122 Susan Turner-Conlon July 16, 2012 ADVERTISING 2 Advertising to Our Young People Causing Obesity Even though today some health organizations are trying to counter the junk food advertising industry, junk food advertisements aimed at our children causes obesity and causes them to grow into obese adults and therefore makes them less active, it creates a public health concern, and advertising companies spend large amounts of money to get children hooked on junk food. First, junk food advertisements aimed at our children causes obesity and causes them to grow into obese adults and therefore they become less active. Some ways that these campaigns appeal to children is by using characters on cereal boxes, by using highly recognizable sports figures on video games, and by having toys come with their meals. Obesity in children increases the more hours they watch television. The more children are exposed to unhealthy food advertisements on television allows for a significant risk factor for obesity. Food advertisements on television make up 50% of ad time on children’s shows. Children who watch more than three hours of television a day increase their chances by 50% in becoming obese over children who watch less than two hours per day. When it comes to our children, we worry so much about the dangers of drugs and pedophiles and violence (Robbins 2011). We forget about what could be the largest danger to our kids: the large amount of money spent in advertisements to get them hooked on junk food. Fast food
