SAT Essay Everyone needs adversity to discover who they are and what they can conquer. Without hardships or crossroads in life, no one would know what to do if a formidable decision or task came along. Adversity begins in the mind and if you aren’t mentally or emotionally prepared for hard times, they can either make you or break you. In life, when someone is studying to pursue their career and get a master’s or doctrine degree, the diploma isn’t handed to them. Grueling work assignments are put in front of the students and they are pushed to persevere and work hard to get through the difficulties. If a student were to quit because of a 2,000 word essay due the next day it would show that they can’t handle a challenge, but on the other hand, it might also show the student that getting a master’s or doctrine degree isn’t the best decision at that point and time in their life. In the Novel, My Name is Asher Lev, Asher Lev is a boy who is a talented artist that grows up in a family of strict Hasidic Jewish beliefs . However, Asher’s controversial art of nudity, depressing, and painful images drives a wedge between him and his mother and father. He has to decide whether he wants to please his family and give up his life-long desire of being an artist, or follow in his father’s footsteps as a Hasidic missionary. The complex situation really breaks Asher down, but he ultimately pursues his artistic career departing from his family for the rest of his life. Asher knew the consequences of pursuing his artistic career, but made sure he was emotionally prepared for the outcome because walking away from his family wasn’t something that could be dealt with over night. All in all, adversity can have life changing results, but it’s apart of life and everyone goes through a hardship at least once in their lifetime.
