Braver, stronger, faster nvisioned by the Defence Minister and Chief of The Army Staff (COAS) in 2001, Mission Olympics Programme was initiated under the aegis of Directorate General of Military Training (DGMT) to train elite sportsmen in eleven (Fencing included in 2008) selected disciplines in five sports nodes to excel in various national and international competitions. Trained in the progamme, Major (now Colonel) RVS Rathore, AVSM, made history in the Athens Olympics 2004 by being the first ever Indian to win an Olympics silver medal in an individual sporting event (shooting). The plan is to select and train potential and talented sports persons in selected disciplines for excellence at international level and with an overall aim of winning Olympics medals for the country. Potential sportsmen: The suitable talent and potential sportsmen (including children in the age group of 11-14 years) in conjunction with Sports Authority of India (SAI) are selected, trained and nurtured for excellence in sports at national and international level. Provision of employment in the Army at appropriate level is ensured for all suitable sportsmen. THE TORCH-BEARERS E RVC Centre & College, Meerut, AEN has the world class training infrastructure for most of the equestrian events which include show-jumping, dressage and cross country. It is spread over 350 acres. The Army equestrian team has done the country proud by winning a large number of international medals at continental level (Asian Games). The prefect man-animal combination is the first major step towards achieving the ultimate goal of winning an Olympics medal. The 30 elite riders of the Army are currently being trained in AEN, Meerut. In addition 25 children in the age (11-15 years) with the support of SAI are also being trained.
