Students further develop a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of literature as they examine British literature of various genres. In addition, they have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary studies by studying history, culture, and art alongside the literature they read. Students focus on writing analytical essays, in addition to various creative assignments. They learn important research skills as they write literary research reports. Writing portfolios are used to actively engage students in the writing process. Quarterly benchmarks are used to measure growth and may serve as a reflection of students’ understanding of the writing process. The study of grammar, mechanics, usage and vocabulary are also integral to developing life-long readers and writers. This curriculum is supported through the use of essential questions and benchmark writing assignments. Teachers differentiate content, process and product when appropriate to allow each student to achieve his or her full potential. COURSE OBJECTIVES: In this year-long course, students study British Literature, including fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry from the Anglo Saxon era through the 19th century to the present.
