When looking at the life on City Road (‘The Street’, 2009) and observing what happens throughout the course of a day, it is clear that the road is used by a variety of people for many different reasons. City Road has local shops up and down both sides, covering a large range of ethnic cultures. There are food shops, clothe shops, tailoring shops, a sport centre, which on the weekend turns into a market and local newsagents. Recently on City Road, a Tesco convenience store has been opened which to some has proven to be very popular and convenient but for others, it has made life quite difficult. Some of the local shops have been passed down through generations and a shop with such a large market chain attached to it has put many local businesses out of pocket.
Also different age groups may feel that they cant use certain amenities as they don’t feel welcome there. Inequalities can also be found with the local shops. Shops who have been there for many years find it hard when bigger retail stores move in. as they have more money and resources to make the items that they sell cheaper etc. Here are a few examples I found of the above inequalities in and around City Road.
Much like Xquisite Africa, it offers an array of merchandise for a specific ethnic minority in the area. Again, a lot of the people who shop on City Road do not require the specific, culture based products Sanna Silk sells, which could leave them feeling ostracized. There is also a supplementary inequality regarding wealth. From the examples shown in the DVD, Sanna Silk’s prices are prohibitive to some. During the interview the family are quite happy to discuss their wealth and seem to encourage the interviewer to ask about the costly products they sell “Do you see how much one costs or?
Williams 1 Ragine Williams Ms. Wilson ENG 105 – 22 3 December 2013 Disadvantages of Moving Frequently People move for new jobs, to live in a better environment, or to start a new life. To have a place to call home is essential in a person’s livelihood. People often take pride in the city they came from. Routines like waking up at six in the morning, to traffic on the way to work, from making dinner at six in the afternoon can be drastically impacted through the constant occurrence of relocating. Moving frequently can affect a person’s lifestyle, such as changing friendships, effecting careers and lowering happiness.
Education is the key to economic mobility and avoiding poverty. Having a poor economic outlook restricts these labor immigrants from ever being able to find that upward mobility. “If most immigrants are not illiterate, they also are not all college graduates” (Portes and Rambaut 68). We need to have more professionals in our state because we lag behind many others on maintaining a strong economy. Building a stronger economy means being able to have the millions that are here continue their education and this would have positive impact on the economy.
They may be less likely to achieve as well at school due to lack of space at home to complete homework. This could result in low expectations of themselves. Housing and Community- Poor housing can affect a child's development. Living in a community where children experience anti-social behaviour can lead to families being isolated and children may not speak to their parents. This could also make it difficult to access education and children may get excluded from school due to behaviour.
Although both authors prove strong points it is obvious that whether your choice is college or trade school, as long as you apply yourself you will be guaranteed future success. “The individual benefits that college graduates enjoy, including high levels of savings, increased personal/professional mobility, improved quality of life for their offspring, better consumer decision making, and more hobbies and leisure activities” (Porter, 494). Porter is explaining that a college educated individual will have a life full of endless opportunities, and a strong set of morals. A college degree is valued in our society, and we are led to believe it’s a staple for our success socially and economical. Attending college can boost your confidence giving you a piece of mind knowing you have a solid educational background.
I believe it is because of money and competitions of universities. As soon as a rival university sets their price higher the other universities sets their price higher as well. Universities used to have the government help them financially but that help has reduced a great amount and the competition to get students has greatly increased. Schools are trying to build a better foundation for students to attend but with money being spent to make the university “look better” the price to attend goes higher. With the economy being so hard right now to get a “good” enough job to be able to afford to go to a major university is hard I think that many students should make their own business.
The lack of funding also means that students have inadequate access to resource that lessens their chances of learning effectively. It can be
College Should Be Free For All Students College too many students mean a higher education that leads to a bright future. Of course, there is challenging work that needs to be fulfilled over a period, in order to meet the expectations of living life in a certain way. However, the hard work put into the dream of attending a university has a possibility of not coming true due to the lack of unfortunate families, competition, and lastly government decision-making. A funded education is needed for every upcoming generation. In addition, a modern country needs highly skilled graduates of all kinds.
