In Ads R Us Barrett changes many things, including Taylor Claire Carmichael’s novel Ads R Us is set in the future, it follows Barrett’s journey to the chattering World. Along the way, he changes many things and people including Taylor and himself. He also plays an important role in changing the status quo in the Chattering World as he helps to overthrow Maynard Rox. Through their experiences together, Taylor’s identity is influenced by Barrett. Before Barrett moved to the chattering world, Taylor was a spoilt teenager, who got everything she wanted. When her mum Kara Trent, informed Taylor that they were going to pick up a relative that neither of them had ever met, Taylor was not very impressed. Barrett also helped Taylor realise that no one can be trusted, and that she should not always believe everything she hears from the Senator Rox and the government Taylor never paid any attention to ads, and usually ignored them (as she explained in Page 207). Barrett helped Taylor realise that advertising in the Chattering World, was all about the government trying to persuade everyone to vote for them. For example, when Senator Rox lied about the “Q-Plague” disease, so he can come up with a cure for it (Cue-Kill) to gain money and respect from the public. Barrett does not only change Taylor, he also changes himself. Through the book Barrett becomes a stronger and more knowledgeable person, learning many different things that he would not have learnt at Simplicity. When Maynard Rox found out that Barrett and Taylor knew about the monitoring devices that had been implanted in them, he abducted them and took them to the Fysher-Platt infirmary. He made them watch advertisements to get there reactions, he kept them there as long as he could because he knew that Barrett and Taylor knew too much about his
