Treatment planning includes a balance of both trauma and behavioral focal point, working on ongoing behavioral problems and behavioral crises, modify distorted thinking so that families could have the knowledge to transfer, and children can learn how to talk through their experiences. Results: Cognitive therapy also incorporated with behavioral therapy practice to manage the behavioral regulation problems that commonly happens in traumatized children. Conclusions: Treating trauma related behavioral problems is a crucial part of trauma-focused treatment and is achievable if practice is done accordingly. This practice is important due to the common nature of behavioral dilemma in traumatized children (Cohen, 2007). CBT 3 Cognitive behavioral therapy is generally psychotherapy and behavioral therapy combined.
The psychotropic medications have often not been tested thoroughly on children or approved by the FDA for children’s use. Some of the medications that have obtained FDA approval have questionable reliability because their primary funding source for the research was pharmaceutical companies or their affiliates. Because of these and many other reasons, there is a social dilemma in our society over whether or not to medicate children for their problem behaviors or due to a mental health diagnosis. Using the Six-Step Policy Anaylsis Framework (Jansson, 2008), this paper will explore the available research on the effects of medications on children. The research and other available resources will be examined to see how current research findings and practice, and future research topics may be used to develop new policy on prescribing psychotropic medications to children.
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It has been recorded that it is unknown on what exactly causes ADHD, but it does say that genetics are partly a cause of it. The rate for boys and girls are 5.5% girls and 11.2% boys have ADHD (www.statisticbrain.com/attention-deficit-disorder-adhd-statistics). Experts say that ADHD has a strong genetic component; however they think that the neurotransmitters are different in an ADHD person (What Causes ADHD...). Studies say that it can occur if the mother did certain things while pregnant such as smoking or drinking.
It wasn't until my first assignment as a substitute that I realized that my job was a lot more complex than just "keeping an eye" on children, and not just any children, but children with disabilities. As a substitute I encountered children of which were emotionally disturbed, autistic, and everything else in between. I developed more of a special interest in children with autism after being asked to fill a vacancy at the site in which I currently work. My site consists of two units: ED unit (emotionally disturbed) and ALT ASSESS (alternate assessment). Throughout the regular school year I'm assigned to the alternate assessment unit, in a class consisting of six students, one classroom teacher, and two paraprofessionals (6:1:1).
Single Parents with Young Children Beckford, Martin “The Telegraph” Oct 10, 2008. In reviewing research from Martin Beckford, Social Affairs Correspondent with The Telegraph, I learned quite a lot of interesting information pertaining to the emotional problems children raised by single parents face. Research says that children from broken homes are five times more likely to develop emotional problems than those living with both parents. This could be true, due to the fact that parentless children, seem to act out more, when one or both parents are missing. The Office of National Statistics, interviewed parents, teachers, and children themselves, and found that many suffer from emotional problems such as depression, anxiety and aggression.
It cannot be denied that the daily choices a pregnant woman makes may affect the mental health of her fetus. Prenatal problems that include excessive drinking, drug abuse, and smoking during pregnancy, as well as exposure to other harmful chemicals such as pollutants and heavy metals in early pregnancy, may cause mental retardation in the fetus as well. Being considered as perinatal problems, complications of pregnancy, premature birth, very low birth weight, difficult delivery, birth drama, and unusual stress on the head and lack of oxygen during birth are often associated with mental retardation. Finally, postnatal problems tend to involve with numerous outside factors that include environmental, social, and behavioral issues. Brain infections, head injury, physical injuries, and near drowning in childhood can damage the brain of a growing child, which have found to be related to mental retardation more or less.
It is treated in a number of different ways; two of the most popular stimulant drugs are Ritalin. And Concerta, it is a prescription product approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as part of a total treatment program that may include counseling or other therapies. Conclusion: ADHD seem to be hitting today’s youth at an exponential rate. If there are possible doubts about having ADHD there are many routes to take. First I would suggest speaking with authorities at the school: teachers, principal, assistant principal, counselors, or even the school psychologist.
Cognitive behavioral therapy works with clients to understand their thoughts and feelings and how each influences their behavior. In the reading, Christopher Boone is a teenager with Asperger Syndrome, a mild form of autism; described by WebMD as “delays in the development of many basic skills…the ability to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination” (WebMD, 2013). Handling Christopher’s temper tantrum would be a major goal for his mother Judy. Since cognitive therapy focuses on specific problems, this approach could help Christopher’s mother work on changing her behavior and thought process when dealing with Christopher’s condition. Since thoughts play a role in behavior, Christopher’s mother’s feelings of inadequacy could come from depression.
Each substance can cause severe and permanent damage to children before and even after birth. Researchers have found that these substances can cause low birth weight, premature delivery, fetal alcohol syndrome, mental retardation, learning disabilities, stillbirth, miscarriages, and under developed limbs. Many babies born to mothers that have abused alcohol and drugs while pregnant are born addicted to the substance and go through withdrawal symptoms after being born. Some women are able to quit using these substances when becoming pregnant but many women are not and need professional help to quit. Pregnant women face many barriers when trying to get help for their substance abuse problems.
While this is a fairly new topic, professionals like Andrew S. Davis et al. advocate for this in his article, Understanding and Treating Psychopathology in Schools: Introduction to the Special Issue. This article addresses the studies in the journal, Psychology in Schools, and expresses the need of trained professionals to diagnose and treat children with psychopathy, or children with mental illnesses such as Anxiety, Depression, Early Onset Bipolar Spectrum Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Radicalized Attachment Disorder. Rather than just exposing students to and making them aware of mental health, this article calls for a "collaborative system of care that comprehensively meets the mental health needs of students" by having mental health professionals, such as psychologists and counsellors, and educators working with students that specifically have some form of psychopathy (Davis et al., 415). These must be adults who have been trained to either treat mental illness, using counseling or medication, be able to look for symptoms of mental illness, or sometimes both.
