ADHD is a neurobiological disorder caused by severe and pervasive symptoms of Attention, Hyperactivity, and Impulsivity. This disorder is often associated with other co morbid problems as well such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and/or Conduct Disorder (CD).A small percent of children with ADHD have other associated learning disorders of reading, spelling, and writing. Children that are inattentive, disruptive, or have problems with memories are less likely to perform highly in academics. ADHD causes underperformance in all aspects of life. Academic performance is greatly affected by ADHD; there are several disadvantages, causes, and different stages. Daley D. D, & Birchwood, J. J. (2010).
School-age children are the main focus of ADHD and academic performance. Since ADHD is viewed the most common in kids. The academic skills needed for academic development is usually acquired in the pre-school years. Some pre-school children suffer from impulse control, low attention spans, and hyperactivity. These children often have problems with remembering information, academic skills, basic math, and reading skills. Often if the signs are caught early on the child can be placed in special classes and avoid the underachievement that is associated with ADHD.
