Adam and Amy Robert Cormier’s I am the Cheese is an intensely controversial book about a boy and his journey that jump starts talk between classmates and teachers. Adam and Amy’s rebellious, comfortable, and complex relationship add comic relief to the book. An example of their relationship being rebellious is the numbers game. An example of their relationship being comfortable is when Amy comes out of the bathroom and tells Adam to lighten up. Finally, and example of the relationship being complex is how Adam loves Amy, but Amy might not love him back. The girl that Adam has a crush on, Amy Hertz, created a little thing called the numbers game. Adam is waiting for Amy to come out of the bathroom, hearing flushing noises as he awaits her exit from the room. Adam is a little freaked out by the farting noises she makes. “‘Look, Ace, don’t let a few farts bother you. It’s all part of nature and being alive.’” Amy later says she did it for shock therapy (59). Amy is who she is and isn’t embarrassed by it, even in front of Adam. Adam’s relationship with Amy is complex and a little hard to understand. It is very clear in the book that Adam is in love with Amy. On the other hand, it is hard to tell if Amy loves Adam back as much, or if she just thinks they’re friends. Adam’s love and affection for Amy was obvious. “God, but Amy Hertz was beautiful to watch when she was doing a number” (60). Although there is obvious evidence of Adam loving Amy, there is not a thing that shows Amy loves Adam. The relationship flows very nicely, but is very complex. Robert Cormier does a phenomenal job writing this amazing story about a boy on his bike. The rebellious, relaxed, and compound relationship between Adam and Amy add even more depth to the book. Will we ever know how Amy felt about Adam? Students and teachers will be raving about this book for years to come, for its astonishing plot will forever be on the shelves of
