Until now, acid rain is still affecting our society. Therefore, it is time for us to look into this serious problem. The purpose of the essay is to show what acid rain is about, what consequences it can bring to us and what solutions can be used to minimize the problem. This essay will include an overview of acid rain. Secondly, the effects of acid rain to health, environmental and economic issues will be discussed. Finally, this essay will examine the possible solutions for different areas. DISCUSSION Acid rain is a broad term of acid deposition, which can exist in many forms. Wet deposition is rain, snow, fog, or mist that has become more acidic than normal. Dry deposition is another form which is when smoke and dust particles become acidic. Both wet and dry deposition can be carried by the wind, sometimes for very long distances (Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). Also, when the pH level of rainwater goes below 5.6, it is considered acid rain (Pidwirny, 2006). (See Figure 1) Figure 1: The pH level of normal rainwater is 5.6. Source: Pidwirny, 2006 It is generally believed that acid rain is mainly caused by human activities. According to Pidwirny, 2006, acid deposition is mainly formed by secondary pollutants which are resulted from the oxidation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) or sulfur dioxide (SO2) gases and the emission of carbon dioxide that are released into the atmosphere (see
